Marcel Schrötter hat sich an seinem ersten Rennwochenende in der Supersport-Weltmeisterschaft gut verkauft.

Wie der Samstag war auch der vorletzte Renntag von Marcel Schrötter - er wird in einer Woche als Gaststarter beim Finale der australischen Superbike-Serie antreten - von den für Südaustralien typischen Wetterkapriolen geprägt. Während das morgendliche Warm-up unter durchwachsenen Bedingungen stattfand und daher nicht viele Eindrücke gesammelt werden konnten, erbarmte sich das Wetter während des Rennens mit den Teilnehmern, als es trocken blieb.

Im Gegensatz zum gestrigen Regenrennen erwischte Schrötter im zweiten Hauptrennen des Wochenendes von Platz sechs aus der zweiten Reihe einen deutlich besseren Start. Nach einem kurzen Positionsverlust in der ersten Runde überwand der erfahrene Oberbayer schnell anfängliche Schwierigkeiten und war fortan in den Kampf um die Plätze verwickelt. Seine Gegner waren die Italiener Yari Montella, Sieger am Samstag, und Nicolo Bulega. Dieses Trio schloss in dieser Phase auch schnell die Lücke zur Spitzengruppe.

In der zweiten Hälfte des Rennens hatte Schrötter jedoch mit diversen Problemen zu kämpfen, weshalb er das Tempo seiner Konkurrenten nicht mehr mitgehen konnte und kurz vor Schluss von Raffaele de Rosa überholt wurde. Dennoch kann der siebte Platz als Erfolg gewertet werden, da auch die Vorbereitung auf dieses Rennen alles andere als optimal war.

"Ich denke, es war insgesamt ein ordentliches Rennen, zumindest was ich in der ersten Hälfte zeigen konnte. Es hat definitiv Spass gemacht, mit den etablierten Jungs zu kämpfen. Allerdings hatte ich in den ersten paar Runden grosse Probleme beim Bremsen. Das Motorrad reagierte sehr nervös, sobald ich die Bremse berührte. Abgesehen davon sind wir für das Rennen ein grosses Risiko eingegangen, indem wir die Geometrie in eine ganz andere Richtung verändert haben, weil es in den Trainingssitzungen seltsame Bewegungen gab. Für meinen Geschmack war das ein zu grosser Schritt an einem Rennwochenende. Aber das Team wollte es ausprobieren, und wir hatten nichts zu verlieren. Ausserdem war es eine wertvolle Information, die wir für das nächste Jahr mitnehmen können. Am Ende hat es sich auch halbwegs ausgezahlt, denn es hat in der Anfangsphase sehr gut funktioniert. Aber es war auch ein bisschen am Limit. Vor allem an der Front, die durch den Wind manchmal sehr leicht wurde. Teilweise war es schwierig zu fahren, und als der Hinterreifen anfing, sich etwas mehr zu bewegen, wurde das Motorrad sehr unruhig."

"Ich musste viel mit dem Gas kompensieren, um diesen Schwierigkeiten entgegenzuwirken. Das hat uns ein bisschen Zeit gekostet. In den letzten Runden hatte ich auch Probleme beim Herunterschalten, was bei diesem Motorrad generell nicht einfach ist. Irgendwie hatte ich das Gefühl, dass ich keine Kraft mehr im Fuss hatte und deshalb den Schalthebel nicht richtig drücken konnte. So kam es, dass ich in den langsamen Kurven statt mit dem ersten Gang mit dem dritten fuhr. Das geht gar nicht, weil am Eingang die Motorbremse und am Ausgang der Schwung fehlt. Deshalb haben Bulega und Montella wieder zu mir aufgeschlossen und mich auch überholt. Ich hätte auf jeden Fall die Pace gehabt, um zumindest mit den beiden mitzuhalten. Ich bin also ein wenig enttäuscht, weil ich durch diese Probleme Positionen verloren habe und nicht durch mangelnden Speed. Darüber bin ich ein wenig verärgert. Hoffentlich finden wir eine Lösung für das nächste Jahr."

"Auf der anderen Seite bin ich froh, dass ich zeigen konnte, dass ich immer noch schnell bin. Ich denke, dass ich mich mit null Erfahrung an meinem ersten Rennwochenende in dieser Meisterschaft gut verkauft habe. Aufgrund der Wetterbedingungen war es kein Zuckerschlecken. Am Ende hatte ich zwei freie Trainings, ein paar Runden in der Superpole und das war es dann auch schon an Vorbereitung. Im Rennen habe ich bis zur Hälfte sogar um das Podium kämpft. So gesehen war es okay, und das müssen wir mitnehmen. Auf jeden Fall freue ich mich jetzt auf mehr. Vorerst möchte ich mich aber noch einmal bei allen Beteiligten bedanken, dass sie mir die Möglichkeit gegeben haben, einen ersten Eindruck zu bekommen, was auch ein wertvoller Teil der Vorbereitung auf die nächste Saison ist. Zum Schluss möchte ich noch Domi Aegerter gratulieren. Es ist sehr beeindruckend, was er in den letzten zwei Jahren gezeigt hat, nicht nur in dieser Meisterschaft."

🇬🇧 Successful WSSP debut rounded off with seventh place

At his first race weekend in Supersport World Championship, Marcel Schrötter performed impressively despite less-than-ideal preparations.

Like Saturday, Marcel Schrötter's second last day of racing this year - he will be a guest starter at the finale of the Australian Superbike series in a week's time - was characterized by the weather caprices typical of South Australia. While this morning’s warm-up took place under mixed conditions and therefore not many impressions could be gathered, the weather took pity to the participants during the race when it remained dry.

In contrast to yesterday's wet race, Schrötter got off to a much better start in the second main race of the weekend from sixth place on the second row. After a brief loss of a position on the first lap, the experienced rider from Upper Bavaria quickly overcame some initial difficulties and from then on was involved in a fierce battle for position. His opponents were the Italians Yari Montella, winner on Saturday, and Nicolo Bulega. This trio also quickly closed the gap to the leading group at this stage.

In the second half of the race, however, Schrötter had to contend with various issues, which is why he was no longer able to keep up the pace of his competitors and still was overtaken by Raffaele de Rosa shortly before the end. Nevertheless, seventh place can be considered a success, as the preparation for this race was also anything but optimal.

"I think it was a decent race overall, at least what I could show in the first half. It was definitely fun to fight with the established guys. However, I had big problems on the brakes in the first few laps. The bike reacted very nervously as soon as I touched the brake. Apart from that, we took a big risk for the race by changing the geometry in a completely different direction because there were strange movements during practice sessions. For my taste, that step was too big on a race weekend. But the team wanted to try out and we had nothing to lose either. Besides, it was valuable information that we can take with us for next year. In the end, it also paid off halfway, because it worked very well in the early stages. But it was also a bit on the limit. Especially with the front, which sometimes became very light due to the wind. In parts it was difficult to ride, and when the rear tyre started to move a bit more, the bike became very unsettled."

"I had to compensate a lot by playing with the throttle to counteract these difficulties. That cost us a bit of time. In the last laps I also had problems in downshifting, which is generally a task to work on with this bike. As a result, I had the feeling that somehow, I had no more strength in my foot and therefore could not press the gearshift properly. So it happened that in the slow corners I rode with the third gear instead of the first. That does not work at all because in entry the engine brake is missing and the momentum at the exit. That is why Bulega and Montella caught up with me again and also overtook me. I would definitely have had the pace to keep up with both of them at least. So, I am a little disappointed because I lost positions due to these problems and not due to a lack of speed. I am a little upset about that. Hopefully we will find a solution in this matter for next year."

"On the other hand, I am happy that I was able to show that I am still fast. I think that with zero experience I sold myself well on my first race weekend in this championship. It was no walk in the park because of the weather conditions. In the end I had two free practice sessions, a few laps in Superpole and that was it in terms of preparation. In the race, I even fought for the podium until halfway point. From that point of view, it was okay, and we have to take that with us. In any case, I am looking forward to more now. For now, though, I would like to thank everyone involved once again for giving me the opportunity to get a first impression, which is also a valuable part of the preparation for next season. Finally, I also would like to congratulate Domi Aegerter. It is very impressive what he has shown over the last two years, and not just in this championship."
