Marcel Schrötter glänzte in seiner ersten WorldSSP-Superpole mit dem sechsten Startplatz, bevor ihm die regnerischen Bedingungen am Nachmittag zum Verhängnis wurden.

Ein Wetterumschwung am Samstagmorgen veränderte alles auf Phillip Island. Nach einem Regenschauer begann die Strecke vor der Superpole abzutrocknen. Auf der Jagd nach den besten Startplätzen liess Marcel Schrötter einmal mehr sein Potenzial aufblitzen und zeigte, dass ihm die Eingewöhnung an die neue Umgebung keineswegs schwer fällt.

Kurz vor dem ersten Rennen des Wochenendes im Süden Australiens ging am Nachmittag der nächste Regenschauer über Phillip Island nieder. Für Schrötter änderten sich die Bedingungen erneut, denn er hatte bisher keinerlei Erfahrung mit der MV Agusta im Nassen, ebenso wenig wie mit den Pirelli-Regenreifen. Aus der zweiten Reihe startend, hatte der 29-jährige Deutsche von Anfang an Mühe, den krassen Wechsel mit einem Fingerschnippen zu meistern. Schrötter beendete die erste Runde als Zehnter, bevor er im nächsten Umlauf eine weitere Position verlor und in der sechsten Runde nach einem Ausrutscher spektakulär stürzte. Glücklicherweise blieb er dabei unverletzt.

Das letzte Rennen der Saison wird am Sonntag um 14:30 Uhr Ortszeit (04:30 Uhr MEZ) gestartet. Es kann per Live-Stream auf der Internetplattform des österreichischen Rechteinhabers ServusTV.com verfolgt werden. «Eurosport 2» beginnt seine Übertragung 15 Minuten vor dem Start des Rennens.

"Auch heute war es ein positiver Tag, auch wenn ich das Rennen nicht beenden konnte. Vor allem in der Superpole lief es mit Platz sechs besser als erwartet. Ich denke, mehr kann man nicht erwarten. Aber der Regen hat viele Fragezeichen für das Rennen aufgeworfen, denn ich bin dieses Motorrad noch nie im Nassen gefahren und die zwei Runden im Qualifying waren eigentlich schon trocken. Mir blieb nur die Aufwärmrunde, um mich darauf einzustellen. Es war extrem schwierig, sofort die Pace der Jungs zu haben, ohne zu wissen, was auf mich zukommt."

"Obwohl es von Runde zu Runde etwas besser wurde, hatte ich von Anfang an Mühe, Grip zu bekommen und ein Gefühl aufzubauen, vor allem auf der rechten Seite. Als ich einmal versucht habe, etwas mehr zu pushen, war das Rennen für mich auch schon vorbei. Ich hatte auch nichts zu verlieren, also habe ich es versucht. Trotzdem denke ich, dass ich alles richtig gemacht habe und ein Platz zwischen dem achten und zehnten Platz durchaus möglich gewesen wäre. Aber ein Regenrennen muss man erst einmal zu Ende fahren. Ich freue mich auf die zweite Chance am Sonntag und hoffe, dass uns das Wetter ein bisschen mehr in die Karten spielt."

🇬🇧 Brilliant Superpole whilst race crash escaped unharmed

In what was his first ever WorldSSP Superpole, Marcel Schrötter shone with sixth place on the starting grid on Saturday in Australia, before the rainy conditions in the afternoon were his undoing.

A change in the weather on Saturday morning changed everything at Phillip Island. After a rain shower, the track started to dry out before Superpole. In the time chase for the best grid positions, Marcel Schrötter once again flashed his potential and showed that getting used to his new environment is by no means a big task for him.

Shortly before the first race of the weekend at the southern Australian island, the next rain shower hit Phillip Island in the afternoon. Conditions changed again for Schrötter, who had no previous experience with the MV Agusta Supersport machine in the wet, nor with the Pirelli rain tyres. Starting from the second row, the 29-year-old German struggled from the start to master the quite changed conditions with a snap of his fingers. Schrötter finished the first lap in tenth place before losing another position in the next lap and crashing spectacularly out of the race on the sixth lap. Fortunately, he was uninjured in the process.

The final race of the season will start on Sunday at 14:30 local time (04:30 CET). It can be followed via live stream on the internet platform of the Austrian rights holder ServusTV.com. "Eurosport 2" will begin its broadcast 15 minutes before the start of the race.

"Today was also a positive day, even though I was not able to finish the race. Especially in Superpole, things went better than expected with sixth place. I think I cannot had hoped for more. But the rain raised a lot of question marks for the race, because I have never ridden this bike in the wet and the two laps in qualifying were actually already on a dry track. So, I was left with only the warm-up lap to adjust. It was extremely difficult to have the pace of the guys right away without knowing what to expect."

"Although it got a bit better from lap to lap, I struggled from the start to get grip and build up a feeling, especially on the right side. Once I tried to push a bit more, the race was over for me. I had nothing to lose either, so I went for it. Still, I think I did everything right and a place between eighth and tenth would have been quite possible. But you have to finish a rain race first. I am looking forward to the second chance on Sunday and hope that the weather plays a bit more into our cards."
