Der 32-jährige Deutsche war am Freitag nach seinem fünften Platz in der Superpole sichtlich erleichtert.

Marcel Schrötter hatte einen sehr angenehmen Start in das vorletzte Saisonmeeting der FIM Supersport World Championship auf dem Circuito do Estoril, unweit von Lissabon. Trotz geringer Streckenkenntnisse, Schrötter kennt Estoril aus den letzten beiden Jahren und aus den Anfängen seiner internationalen Karriere in der 125-ccm-Klasse, und obwohl die Streckenverhältnisse im letzten Jahr aufgrund des wechselhaften Wetters sehr unterschiedlich waren, fand er im einzigen freien Training am Vormittag schnell ein gutes Gefühl für die Strecke und Bedingungen.

Auch wenn der 13. Platz nicht seine Leistung widerspiegelte, gab ihm der Rückstand von etwas mehr als einer halben Sekunde Hoffnung auf ein gutes Abschneiden in der Superpole. In seiner Zeitenjagd, eine gute Startposition zu erreichen, wurde Schrötter immer schneller, bis er in der letzten Minute der 40-minütigen Session die fünftbeste Zeit fuhr. Aufgrund einer Strafe für einen Konkurrenten wird er jedoch am Samstagmittag Ortszeit vom vierten Startplatz aus ins erste Rennen des Wochenendes gehen.

«Ein erfreulicher Start ins Wochenende, ich bin zufrieden. Bereits im freien Training heute Morgen lief es gut, obwohl Estoril eine Strecke ist, die ich nicht sehr gut kenne. Deshalb waren die ersten Runden ein etwas Vorsichtigeres abtasten. Trotzdem kam ich von Anfang an relativ gut zurecht. Insgesamt war es okay, auch wenn die Platzierung nicht besonders gut war. Aber die Zeitabstände waren sehr gering, was auch in der Superpole nicht anders war. Ich kann mich nicht wirklich an so knappe Abstände in der Supersport erinnern.»

«Meine Runs am Nachmittag waren alle gut und ich habe viel alleine auf der Strecke gearbeitet. Mein Bauchgefühl sagte mir, dass ich eine gute Rundenzeit fahren könnte, wenn ich eine saubere Runde zusammenbekommen würde, was mir im letzten Moment auch gelungen ist. Der fünfte Platz in der Ergebnisliste ist extrem wichtig, es ist wie ein Befreiungsschlag. Das heutige Ergebnis verspricht jedoch kein Selbstläufer zu werden, denn wie gesagt, die Konkurrenz ist sehr eng beieinander. Tatsache ist jedoch, dass ich diese Zeit fahren konnte und morgen in der zweiten Startreihe stehen werde. Im Rennen wird es wichtig sein, von Beginn an so nah wie möglich an der Spitze zu bleiben und dann zu sehen, wie die Pace hält.»

EN: «Feels like a liberating blow»

The 32-year-old German rider was visibly relieved on Friday after finishing fifth in Superpole.

Marcel Schrötter had a very pleasant start to the penultimate round of this year’s FIM Supersport World Championship at the Circuito do Estoril, not far from Lisbon. Despite limited track knowledge, Schrötter is familiar with Estoril from the last two years and from the early days of his international career in the 125cc class, and although track conditions varied greatly last year due to changeable weather, he quickly got a good feeling for the track and conditions in the only free practice session this morning.

Even though 13th place did not reflect his performance, the gap of just over half a second gave hopes for a good result in Superpole. In his time attack for a good starting position, Schrötter got faster and faster until he set the fifth-fastest time in the very last minute of the 40-minute session. However, due to a penalty for a competitor, he will start the first race of the weekend from fourth place on the grid on Saturday afternoon local time.

«A pleasing start to the weekend, I am satisfied with. Things went well in free practice this morning, even though Estoril is a track I do not know very well. That is why I was a little more cautious on the first few laps. Nevertheless, I got on relatively well right from the start. Overall, it was okay, even if the position was not particularly good. But the gaps were very tight, which was also the case in Superpole. I cannot really remember such close gaps in Supersport.»

«In the afternoon, meanwhile, my runs were all good, and I worked a lot on my own out on track. My gut feeling told me that I could achieve a good lap time if I could put together a clean lap, which I managed to do at the last moment. Fifth place in the timesheet is extremely important; it's like a liberating blow. However, today's result does not promise to be a sure-fire success, because, as I said, the competition is very close. The fact is, though, that I was able to set this time and will be on the second row of the grid tomorrow. In the race, it will be important to stay as close to the front as possible from the start and then see how the pace holds up.»
